The Seamstress
I finished yet another Holocaust survival memoir yesterday, The Seamstress. Out of all so far, I would recommend the Seamstress and In My Hands the most, although all I've read are good. This book is about a jewish girl in Romania, which was a new perspective for me, but she has to have the strongest spirit of any of the survivors I've gotten to "know" so far. This was also the book that showed me the most horrific side of this tragedy as well as the one that made me see my own ignorance and pride most clearly.
It's interesting what an emotionally moving book does to you, expecially in the days that follow reading it while the material is fresh, is still part of your thoughts. I was in the final two chapters yesterday when I stopped to make the kids lunch. I made a bunch of ham/turkey/cheese sandwiches en masse and stopped myself. I looked at all the food we were getting ready to consume and I felt ashamed. Embarrassed by all I had.
The most memorable lines in the book are these, at the moment the war was over and she (Seren Tuvel, 26 yrs old) arrived at a hospital:
"We were bathed and disinfected, our heads shaved to rid them of lice, and each given a clean pair of men's pajamas and straw slippers. Finally we were put on a scale to be weighed. I weighed 44 pounds, including pajamas.
"I was exhausted and sat down on the ground. Was the war over? It seemed to be, but I was not sure. I was too tired to care, more tired than I had ever been in my life. I closed my eyes.
"Then I felt myself being lifted up in two arms. I opened my eyes. One of the American soldiers was carrying me. I closed my eyes again. Drops of water began splashing on my cheeks and running down my neck. Is it raining again? I thought. No, we're inside now where it would not rain. Then I realized that the soldier carrying me was crying, his tears falling on my face".
It is always in the face of devastation that the most brilliant glimmers of compassion and humanity also come to light. I am truly in awe of people like Seren, who are among about 40 that survived Ravensbrok camp out of the original 10, 000 women taken there in 1943. And not only surviving but helping save a sister and a friend as well. I learned lessons with such impact through these recent stories; all true, by the way. Fortitude, intelligence, love and loyalty - they are all in there.
This book was published posthumously. We almost didn't have it! Seren used to record herself telling these stories and experiences from memory. After she died in America of cancer at age 65, her daughter decided to have them transcribed and gave them over to an author to compile. How grateful I am to them for bringing it to us!

Hair Bow Hanger
I actually did something this week that I can share!
I have really enjoyed learning to make hair bows and clips, but they have just turned into a jumble in a plastic container with all the other ponytail holders and such. I realized that if I was going to spend the time and materials, they needed a place of more prominence (both to take care of them and to find them easier).
I took a baby hanger and attached ribbon on which to hang the hair pretties. Didn't cost me a thing!
It's easy. Cut a reasonable length of ribbon. Loop over about an inch at the top and hot glue on the back. I did mine a little loose so they can slide a bit. Try it!
When my three year old saw it she gasped LOL. She thought it was beautiful to see all those clips together, I guess.
While I'm at it, I will show you close-ups of the two new styles I tried. I love the double bow with the daisy. I would love to make more of those.
Here is my new wide tuxedo clip.

Monday meanderings
A few tidbits from my mind today...
Remember how excited I was for my new calling? Phew, we are rolling now! I left for church at 8:45 yesterday and other than a half hour for a little lunch I wasn't home again till almost 4pm. Just in time for hubby to go Home Teaching and get supper started.
On the way to run errands today, we went over some bumps and my 3 year old said "that was interesting".
I am SO excited for the Olympics to start!
She may be the only person on earth to love containers more than I: Creative Organizer
Our laundry is almost caught up!
The boys finally got their entire room done! Not just done but clothes organized into school/not school. I also now have a list of what they need for school. All the too small, ripped, nasty stuff is out of there too. Huge garbage bag is ready to pitch. Love it! And they have their beloved PlayStation now. They really earned it. What parent is proud of their kids for playing video games?
Anyone else hate insurance woes? We're caught in a loop where the health insurance says we are covered just fine, but all the claims to them are getting returned saying coverage has ended. WHAT? Ugh.

Thrift store fun
Over the weekend we had a great trip to a thrift store. We got hiking shoes for hubby (needed them for scout camp, $2), roller blades for Potter ($2), a riding horse for Princess (50 cents), Jedi's favorite board game, Parcheesi (50 cents) and the best find...a FILA golf bag for hubby's newly inherited dad's clubs ($2.50).
It was a great trip!

Feelin' Good
Life is good. As I move into my second trimester things are looking rosy again. My hubby smells better (ha ha!). My kids are back to getting the occasional real meal. It's like I feel like myself again! I even have a new calling at church which renews my spirit and I am looking forward to serving in a new way.
Last weekend was our anniversary and we got to stretch it out over about three days which was very cool. Thanks to all three sisters who facilitated the weekend in one way or another we were able to go to the temple to do sealings, The Roof (a fabulous restaurant downtown), and spend a night at the Alaskan Inn in Ogden Canyon. I recommend both highly!
This picture was taken from our table during dinner:
It was all very beautiful and it was great to do something a bit extravagant (for us at least), as the next couple years with a baby won't allow us to be away as easily.

Hi Ho - Hi Ho
My oldest two boys share a bedroom. It is a disaster. Always.
At any given time there are one or more rewards hanging over their heads for getting it DONE. Never makes much difference.
Bugs is a tough one. He's not as, um, motivated as Potter, and sometimes it really causes problems. They have been down there for the last few hours because I was making them clean, and Bugs just came to me with a classic line of honesty.
"Mom, you know how I almost never work? Well, Potter is watching TV and I've been working for a long long time"!
At least he admits it.
That's the good stuff
It's no secret that Summer is not my favorite time for the year. I feel like I can't walk out my front door without being scorched. But I do take exception in one area. Fresh corn just may be the reason to keep having Summer!
With butter & salt, without, whatever. It's fabulous. Just the smell of the cornsilk brings back a flood of memories. All at once I'm at my Grammy's house and Pappy is counting how many ears he'll need to buy at the farmer stand. Soon enough he's back with a brown bag full. We sit on the back porch shucking the corn so Grammy can make them for supper. That is summer.

They are sabotaging me
So for family night on Monday we did a little cleaning. And organizing. And I made my kids help so they could earn their "treat". I know, I'm mean.
We took care of some boxes just sitting around in the basement and cleaned up the food storage area that had been out of control for a while. I shop, send the boys down with the grocery bags to storage, but then I forget to go organize it.
Anyway, it also needed done because we had been noticing occasional ant visitors over the last couple weeks.
During the cleaning session Strider noticed an opened package of something, probably inviting the ants. We got it cleaned up and all was good.
This morning I was helping the kids with the family room and we started to vacuum. Jedi asked if he could also vacuum the "crackers in storage". Knowing that hubby just did that, I asked him "WHAT crackers in storage"? I looked into the shelving area and saw a two foot long trail of Cheez-its.
"Mom, I was making a trap for the ants".
It worked. We had lots of visitors.
The kids are sabotaging me.

Ok, I need to hire someone
I know my homemaking skills aren't the best. I lack. I have a messy house more often than a clean one. My kids don't complain. I guess they don't know anything different. (And I haven't done laundry in a week).
But there is a real problem when I walk to the washer to start a load and I am hit by a spiderweb in the face. And arm. Yep, stretched right across my laundry room. Yay! My feeling of confidence as a homemaker is soaring!!
I know I should have probably never revealed that to all of you, but I'm all about keepin' it real around here.

One of the most inspiring stories I have heard in a long time. What a woman.

Happy News
New baby on the way...EDD 1/30/09
Maybe I'm just bad at keeping secrets. Or maybe I'm tired of making up excuses for my feeling lousy and being exhausted. But yes, we are adding one more to our family. We are so excited!
We have known for a while that there was another small one to come to us, but for whatever reason it took a bit longer than expected (Princess will be almost 4). We are so thankful for this blessing, though, and look forward to rounding out our family and feeling complete.
So that's why my posts have slowed down a bit, and a lot less substance overall. But now you can understand!

Weekend fun
We had a great time on the 4th, seeing the parade and camping in Mount Pleasant. Sister's in-laws are very nice and hospitable people. They were so kind to feed us and show my kids how to saddle up the horse to take a ride.
We are such city slickers; one of the highlights was seeing them herd their sheep from one pasture to another. Very cool.
Strider and I are wondering what it would be like to live on a farm. It sure is neat in those small farming towns.
Here's a couple slide shows for your enjoyment.

Happy Independence Day
Yes, I took that picture. That was part of the finale at our hometown fireworks display last year.
I love fireworks. This year for the first time we will watch them in a different town, but I'm looking forward to being with my sister.
If you look on the sidebar over there >>>>> you'll see my list of recent books read. I have had a bit of fascination with holocaust survival stories lately, as the last three books were all from WWII Germany and Poland. I want to whole-heartedly recommend In My Hands that I just finished yesterday. It is so far my favorite historical book on the subject. It's a real story, which is different from Striped Pajamas and Book Thief, and it probably why it was so good to me. Reading these things leading up to July 4th has been interesting as well. What a hopeful, scary, admirable, unstable world we live in. Yet I think it's always been that way. Maybe it's getting a bit worse, but evil has always been evil, and good ultimately prevails. Sometimes the righteous suffer but God is watching.
I love my fortunate circumstances. I love that I can wake up every day and choose what to do and say. Happy Birthday, America!!

Good eats
Tonight I knew I wanted a chicken dish.
I decided on this:
Garlic Chicken Farfalle
It was truly out of this world. My family totally loved it and so did I. I followed the recipe exactly (okay, I did cut the bacon in half. One pound seemed like a lot), which is unlike my normal "this 'n that" chef self.
And I'm posting our extraordinary dessert, too. I woke up this morning and knew I just had to have Blueberry Junk, my friend Sonja's famous 5-star dish.
I didn't have Dream Whip on hand and I wanted it so bad today, that I dragged all four kids to the store and paid full price for the stuff so I could make the yummy deliciousness.
Here ya go:
Blueberry Junk
2 C Graham cracker crumbs
1/2 c butter (melted)
2 envelopes Dream Whip
1 C cold milk
1 1/2 C powdered sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 (8 oz) pkg. cream cheese (softened)
1 can blueberry pie filling
Mix crumbs and butter. Pat into bottom of 9x13-inch pan. Don't bake.
Whip together Dream Whip and milk until stiff. Add sugar and vanilla; stir. Cut cream cheese in small pieces; add to Dream Whip mixture and beat well. Pour over crust. Spread evenly and then top with pie filling. Refrigerate. Keeps well.
MMMmmmmmm
